NICOLE WERMER (b. 1971, Emsdetten, Germany), currently living and working in London, showcases her sculptures, photographs and collages, as it connects formal considerations with a discussion about urban space and its social, economical and psychological aspects. Combining and reconfiguring familiar objects into new material forms, Wermers addresses the structures of ritualised social relations and the material objects through which these associations are communicated. These works transform, contain, and frame their environment, prompting a deeper consideration of how surface and design read as social and cultural indicators.
Wermer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Hamburg (Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg) and later received an MFA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London in 1999. Selected recent solo exhibitions include Reclining Fanmail, Kunsthaus Glarus, Glarus Switzerland (2022); Emscher Folly, curated by Britta Peters, Emscher Kunstweg, Oberhausen, Germany (permanent public art commission) (2022); Manners, Tate Britain, London (2018) and Nicole Wermers: Givers & Takers, Taya Bonakdar Gallery, New York, NY (2016). Among her selected group exhibitions are the Undermining & Oversharing, curated by Nicole Wermers, Produzentengalerie Hamburg (2022); A Women Qualities, Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, Halle (Saale), Germany (2021), Public Knees for Kunsthal Aarhus BBC, Kunsthall Aarhus, Denmark (2021) and More More More, curated by X Zhu-Nowell, Tank, Shanghai (2020).
Wermer attended residencies at Delfina Studio Trust in London (2004) and at Camden Arts Centre in London (2005). In 2012, Wermer received a fellowship at Villa Massimo, a German cultural institution in Rome (2012). And in 2015, Wermers was nominated for the Turner Prize.
