New immersive video installation by Sarah Choo Jing

Location: National Gallery Singapore, Gallery 10

Date: 10 December 2016 - ongoing

Art of the Rehearsal is a three-channel immersive video installation by multidisciplinary artist Sarah Choo Jing. This artwork depicts Singaporean dancers across various cultures practising along the back lanes of cultural districts in the city. Reflecting on the rigorous and intense training behind the performance, the artist seeks to bring out the consistent determination of the performers. The emphasis of the installation work is on the process rather than on the final outcome.

Where theatre collapses is the place where ‘rehearsal’ starts. ‘Rehearsal’ is not a formal performance. Repeatable and likened to an ephemeral experiment; it can turn any social space into a theatre and vice versa. During ‘practice’, the theatre is no longer the domain of seeing and being seen, or a performance space that excludes real life reality. It is rather a space subjected to constant self-immersing, interruption, and deconstruction. Rehearsing finds itself in the transfer station between the onstage and offstage, theatre and real life.

There are two parts to this video installation: part one is a panoramic video projection of a composite of back alleys in Singapore at three separate city locations: Chinatown / Little India / Kampong Glam. Part two: three portraits of dancers backstage looking into a ‘mirror’, each in their individual preparation, before delivering a performance.

The dance performance in the video is presented by Apsaras Arts Ltd, Era Dance Theatre and Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre.

About Gallery 10

National Gallery Singapore, Gallery 10 is an experimental space where the traditionally binary ideas of art and science are both celebrated and deconstructed, and their boundaries transcended and redefined to present an immersive, multi-disciplinary exploration of the world around us.
