Hyphenate brings together works by three female artists: Amy Bernstein (b.1980, US), Betsy Bradley (b.1992, UK) and Weixin Quek Chong (b.1988, Singapore). The exhibition explores how, in painting and sculptural installation, the artists render explorations of language in terms of the calligraphic, typographical and even as logograms.

Amy Bernstein (b. 1980, US) is an artist and writer based in Los Angeles, California. For the last two decades, she has been dedicated to painting and writing, concerning herself with limitations, the liminal spaces intrinsic to and social functions of abstract languages and the possibilities of colour. Recent exhibitions include: A Good Line A Good Lie, A.I. Gallery, London (2021), Unknown, the Witch(solo) (2018), Ditch Projects, Springfield; Between The Dog and The Wolf (solo) (2018), Stumptown Artist Fellowship; Portland; (re)buffer (2018), Private Places; Portland; A Lover’s Race (solo) (2017), Nationale, Portland; I Am This (2017), Oregon Jewish Museum and Centre for Holocaust, Portland and A Lot, A Lot (2017), Galleri Thomassen, Gothenburg.

Betsy Bradley (b. 1992, UK) is a contemporary British artist based in the UK. Her practice seeks to communicate an experience of the present moment, embodying a dialogue between thought and action. Paint acts as an extension of the artist’s body and mind, physically suspending impulsive gesture. Her meditative processes unify these elements of being; moments free from thought in which the paint takes on its own agency. Driven by discovery, Bradley deliberately evokes moments that lie on the cusp of becoming. Her use of found materials and improvised mark-making tools challenge the hierarchical connotations of traditional painting. Recent exhibitions include: Betsy Bradley, Vardaxoglou, London, UK (2022), Chasing Rainbows, Ikon, Birmingham, UK (2022), By A Thread, A.I. Gallery, London (2022). Bradley has also attended residencies including, Grand Union Gallery Residency and Royal Drawing School Dumfries House Residency, Scotland.

Weixin Quek Chong (b. 1988, Singapore) is a Singaporean visual artist known to work with image, objects, audiovisual and at times performative elements to play with perception and tantalise the senses. Chong's recent projects are inspired by processes of transformation in the biodiverse world as well as cyborgian adaptation- incorporating sensorial-based explorations that frequently involve tactility, sound, and immersive environments. Recent exhibitions include: The Texture of Promises, Kutxa Kultur Artegunea, Spain (2022), ontogenesis dreams: a sideways stretching of the sensory limbs (collaborative work), Esplanade Performing Arts Residency, Singapore (2022), deepdreams_sublimed,  solo show, A.I. Gallery, London (2021). Chong has also attended several residencies including, National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art, Seoul and NTU Centre of Contemporary Art, Singapore Urban Explorations by MediaLab, Atelier Valero, Paris.
