FIONA ONES (b.1986, Germany) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose primary interest lies within the shifting boundaries of the photographic medium.
Ones is also concerned with exploring the parallel between photography and drawing. Using experimental techniques, her practice challenges and engages with traditional photographic notions of surface, light, the negative and positive, the trace, as well as the sense of an invisible ‘apparatus’ (the camera, pen or needle).
Ones’ prolific practice includes a series of archival works titled Just Like You, But Different (2017). The found-images are re-contextualised into different speculative personal histories composed of fragmented recollections. By either erasing or partially drawing on the image with a needle and oil paint, Ones augments the subjective nature of our documented memories. Individual details and certain motifs become the central focus of the works, emanating a more fragile and granular narrative from the past.
Ones completed a BFA in photography and design at Parsons School of Design in New York, where she subsequently spent five years working as a designer and creative director in various of fields including fashion and film, before returning to Munich to set up a creative studio. Ones is widely exhibited, including group shows at A.I. in London (2023 & 2024); at UNSEEN Fair (2016 & 2018), Amsterdam;PhotoLondon (2015); Kunstverien Munich (2015); CameraWorks, Berlin (2015); Daniel Cooney Fine Arts Gallery, New York (2009); Espace Commines, Paris (2008); Slideluck Potshow, Berlin (2010); Gallery Bar, New York (2010); and Calumet Gallery, New York (2009).
